Guys, a quick question on ESC brands. I was thinking about picking up a ICE 100 for my Airwolf for that super silky smooth and slow spool up that I am not getting from the Phoenixtech but I recently came across the HK Yep brand and heard they were fairly good ESCs. Any input on this product or should I stick with whats been around and go with the ICE? Thanks.......

I have the ice and haven't had a problem with it yet. Mind you I haven't done anything with it other than spin it up with no blades just to check my rotation direction It is a 8s max lipo cell count as I ma sure you already know

Well you know I have one and can tell you go for it. You wont get a slower spool up than it and it runs really cool. There is lots out there that wont touch an ICE because of the amount of them that blew. I suppose its all down to each person. I also have the ICE 80 on my 500 Hughes and had no issues do date. The only thing missing on he YEP is data log.

Joe, just wondering and since I never had anything other than stock Phoenxtech esc's...how important is it to have data log? Thanks!

That's a good question Doc and to be honest to me it is not that important. Recently my scale bird came down, no damage, and I used it and it turned out to be a dead battery. My fault. But I could have used a meter to tell that. I also have HS tachs so I dont need that feature. I then bought a digi remote temp gauge and used it a few times but I did not need that as the things run cool. Any charger will tell you what current the battery takes to recharge so you dont need that. So to answer your question, it's not that important. What did we do only a couple of years ago before we had that? Safe your bucks I say and go for it. Plus the start up on this is a lot slower that the ICE. Which you would want. Just buy the programming card with it to make things handy.

Doc,
You might want to look at the Castle Talon 90. It is more value priced (can be had for around $70) and has a killer bec. But, because of the lower price, you will give up a few things like the data log.

If you haven't heard of the Talon line - it was developed for 550 size helis. It incorporates a Castle BEC Pro into a Castle esc. To keep the prices down, they did away with some of the programming, like the logger and voltage is only selectable to 6 or 8 volts (a BEC Pro can do every .1 volt from around 4.8 to around 8.5). $76 from Tower, but if you buy two, you can use the $20 off coupon and get them for $66.99 each.

WOW....NICE! So you're saying the Talon already has a BEC Pro in it? Damn, I would save me some $ cause I was going to pick up a BEC Pro for my 700 soon as well. I really need to look into this one. Does it also have a nice slow spool up? Thanks...

Does it also have a nice slow spool up? Thanks... It has the same programming as far as spool up as the Ice series. I just looked up the BEC Pro specs and it is adjustable from 4.8V to 12.5V whereas the Talon 90 is only selectable 6 or 8 volts. Here are the BEC Pro specs: Power Specs: - Max Input: 12S LiPo (50.4V) - Adjustable Output Voltage: 4.8V-12.5V - Max Output Current: 20 Amps peak - Max Continuous Current: -- @ 16V Input = 15A Continuous -- @ 24V Input = 13A Continuous -- @ 32V Input = 11A Continuous -- @ 40V Input = 9A Continuous -- @ 48V Input = 8A Continuous Talon 90 BEC specs: 20 amp peak* 9 amp continuous So, the BEC Pro will give you a 20 Amp peak and 13 Amps continuous at 24 volts whereas the Talon 90 will still do the Peak of 20 but continuous of 9 Amps. It's very close and the BEC is way better than most anything else out there. For your 700, the Talon is obviously too small. When you connect your BEC Pro to your 700 make sure you only connect it to one 6S battery. While it's capable to run off a 12S you'll only get 8 Amps continuous whereas you'll get 13 Amps if you run it off a single 6S pack.

I never heard of this one either sounds good and good price.I used a 3000 mah life pack with mine instead of bec. A bit of overkill but the hell!

Ah, thanks for the info. Too bad they don't have a bigger size Talon for my 700 but I certainly can use it for my 600 Airwolf.
Come to think of it, this will all work out just fine. I currently have a Bec Pro on the 600 which i can move over to the 700 if I p/u the Talon for the 600. I just need to find a good ESC for the 700 since I will opt out on using the stock Phoenix tech for it as well. Damn it! Life would be so much easier if the Phoenix tech just had a good slow spool up feature!

I would not put the talon on the 600. I would not put it on a bigger machine than the 550. I still Highly recommend running a separate BEC on bigger birds just in case.... The esc goes up in smoke.
