OK guys, I have a question for you. What is a good material to use for repairs on a 450 size fuse? My son wanted to fly my 450 Huey today and came in too fast. Cracked the boom on the fuse & lost some pieces. I want to putz around with it instead of just buying a new one. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Hey Doc, sorry to hear that. Since I've not had to repair one yet I can only assume going with some fiberglass. Good luck

Actually I started already. I was bored last night & looking for something to do. So I mixed up some 5 minute epoxy & started filling cracks/holes. I know it's heavy material, but like I said; "I like to putz around with things". If I don't like it I can always carefully Dremel it out/off. Still looking for opinions though!

Doc, You still repairing? How did the epoxy job turn out? If you're still looking for some ideas can you post some pictures so we can see the extent of the cracks. I've had some luck with light cloth and CA for minor cracks and epoxy thinned again with cloth for bigger cracks. Just depends on how many cracks, how long and if there are any gaps to fill.

Yep, still repairing. Epoxy did surprisingly well. There were some really big cracks & a couple chunks out. I used green painters tape with a bunch of small holes punched in it for material. (Didn't have any light cloth, so I got inventive.) I used CA to hold the tape & applied 2 light coats of epoxy to see how it would hold. It seems to work well so I started to sand. After I finish sanding I will apply a little more epoxy & finish sanding it smooth. Sorry guys, I didn't think of taking pics. I just wanted something to putz with on a rainy evening. I will post pics before I repaint though.

Doc, Good to hear you made some progress. Never heard of anyone using green tape with holes with epoxy to fix cracks. Need to keep us updated on how this works out. Just FYI if you don't have any fiberglass cloth you can also use clothing material but it will not give you as much strength and you need to find something that is porous enought to wet through. You can also use drywall mesh. This works good as it has an adhesive on one side. You should probably use several layers staggered as the mesh grid is fairly wide. After you put the mesh in place, spread the epoxy over it. Let us know how the green tape works out for you.

Thanks, gugie. Never even thought of drywall tape. I still have about a roll left over from a remodel job on part of the house last year. I just used the green tape & epoxy as a sort of experiment. I was bored & wanted something to do. It seems to be working surprisingly well. I haven't made any progress lately. Between Military Honors & Memorial Day ceremonies. I've been pretty occupied. I think I might keep on with my experiment. Like I said, it seems to be working really well. If it doesn't pan out I can always re-do it or just toss it & buy another Huey fuse. 450 size isn't that expensive. I just like to putter around.
