Hi Guys, I am about to put a bigger pinion into my 500 so before it arrives I decided to do a check on everything. I noticed that there was a bit of play when I held the head and the rear blades. After taking everything apart I saw the pins on both ends of the TT were coming loose and on one end had developed a lot of play. The pin had made the hole larger and the end were moving in the tube. It's a good job I noticed it now so I thought I would pass this info on. I re-drilled the ends and used liquid metal with the pins re-installed. Attachments:

Wow that is a lot of slop that developed, have you ever had any incidents where the tail hit the ground, but nothing broke? I am just asking because wouldn't the torque tube be under consent pressure in the same direction while flying and a tail strike could induce just enough slop to allow the hole to enlarge under normal flying conditions. That sort of elongated hole is the sort of thing we would see on crank arms at the bike shop. It comes from people who keep riding after the arm has come loose and its the back and forth motion that causes the spindle hole to elongate. Keep in mind I am no engineer and this could have been caused by a number of things I wouldn't even think of

That's a very good question George but I had no such things happen. Everything is like new on the heli including the tail blades. I use a rubber mat to land on so it was not caused by long grass either. The tube is very thin soft metal and the ends are just pushed in. When the pin goes it goes! The TT in the 600 is much thicker. I will put up a vid shortly to show just gona edit it now. What's the weather like over in your neck of the woods now? Any snow? Bloody freezing here and too windy for flying :-(

As I said I have a bigger pinnion on the way and I also ordered hardened steel screws for the head and tail because of the higher HS so I might just go ahead and replace the TT / bearings and gears while I am at it. I will order them of my local HS and have them here before the other stuff arrives. I don't like taking chances on stuff like that that cost nothing anyway. I am replacing the same screws on the now stretched 600 because of the bigger blades.

Bloody freezing here and too windy for flying :-( There must have been just enough play when new to allow the slop to start. One of the reasons, the main reason, I went with the belt 600 was because I didn't want to deal with the issues a torque tube can have, mainly stripped gears. Weather has been holding out real good so far. We got a bit of the winds and rain from hurricane Sandy, but nothing too bad. It tried to snow yesterday. All we got were a couple of flakes of snow, not even enough to wet the ground when in melted. Today is a great day to go flying, no wind to speak of clear skies, and a balmy 4°C I am still too scared to try flying the 600, I don't want another big repair bill and no flight time. I did take the MCPx out for a bit today, just flew circuits and figure 8s for a couple packs. Then came home and tried making some space my knife shop. I was given an antique metal lathe a few weeks ago. I just shoved it in there when I got it home, but I needed to actually make a spot for it so I could move freely from machine to machine.

Well lucky you! It is windy here but it gets calm and cold in the evening which is typical as it dark early here now. I took the tail gear box apart and the bearings that are usualy a very tight fit on the gear are loose. It must have been caused by the vibs the pin was causing. As I siad I'm ordering new parts anyway. I'm just glad I noticed it all in time. It just shows it pays to give a heli a strip down after a number of flights, which in all fairness it has at this stage. Especially when I'm thinking of putting it into a fuse. I may fbl with it or maybe a multi blade head if I'm good lol! I would like an army fuse of some sort but I'm leaning towards a civilian because the colors are easier to see. I bought my 600 in the Black Friday sales last year from RCA so maybe there may be something on that front this year. I'm in no rush I have enough to do at the moment.

With it stretched to a 700 you gotta get a 700 size fuse! I am really starting to miss flying already. Dark before 5 pm and cold out. Damn you winter....

I am only a few hours east of crmodels, and one international border north, so it gets dark here early too. The thing is, I don't hold down a regular job that keeps me at work during those all important daylight hours. If I look outside and say" Hey its nice out I am not going to go to work today" I don't have to worry about getting fired. One of the perks of being self employed, the bad thing is that the pay sucks I decided that I was going to go FBL on my 600, but the BW head is sold out the last time I looked, but with winter coming on I will be less likely to skip work and should be able to afford some other options for my 600. I really want a Huey fuse for it ;D
