I just started building a chaos 600 with the fly bar. I was wondering with anyone had a recommendation on a good quality motor. I don't plan to 3d, but would like to put a UH-1 fuselage maybe sometime in the future. I flew Nitro in the 90's and am a little confused on the electric motors.
Thanks, Jim

Welcome to the Lounge Harpy...
Have you decided what battery cell count you plan on using? 6s, 8s,10s, or 12s is all possible with the Chaos 600.

Yes, welcome Jim. You'll like the 600. As for picking a motor...like drev said, you'll first need to figure out how many cells of a lipo you're planning to go with. For the 550-600 size helis, you will want to start at the very least of a "6S" and from there you can go higher depending on what you want to do. Since you've already mentioned you are planning on putting it into a fuse down the road, then a 6S will be sufficient as far as power is concern but also using up less room inside a fuse. Once you figure out how many cells you're going with, then you can decide on a motor. As for brands, there are many out there but the most popular one is the Scorpion. You'll also need to pick out a ESC as well and the most popular one of that is the Castle Creation (CC). Here is an example of what you'll need if you decide to go with a 6S setup.... Scorpion motor......www.scaleflying.com/Scorpion-HK-4025-630_p_563.htmlCC ESC......www.scaleflying.com/CASTLE-CREATIONS-PHOENIX-ICE-100-BRUSHLESS-SPEED-CONTROL_p_321.htmlKeep in mind that these examples are pretty standard/typical but there are many other brands and price points that you can choose depending on your budget. Good luck, hope this helps.

Many thanks that was a big help. I think I'll start with a 6s. The KV was my biggest question and the recommendations made everything clearer as far a parameters. Thanks for the quick responses. Really enjoying building the heli it's a really nice kit.

Jim, Don't be distracted by KV. That's important when you decide on how may LiPo cells you're going to fly with. The first thing to figure out is how much power (watts) you need. The heavier your build the more power it'll take to get it flying. Rule of thumb is 250-300 watts per pound (flying). Check out HeliFreak. There's plenty of info there about choosing the right motor for your bird. Here's a link to a thread I came across a while back. Dtabuenc does a good job of explaining power to weight requirements. Good luck with your build. www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?p=3790645#post3790645

Ok, thanks for all the info I am at least getting a good start to begin reading up. I am seeing the relation between cell count, KV, and tooth count. I guess my next question would be what would be the proper hover RPM for lazy flying or scale 2 blade. I could get 1206rpm with a 15 tooth and 965rpm with a 12 tooth with just 1 6S.

I have the Chaos 600e super combo kit from a couple years ago (one of the early "SKULL" canopy kits). It came with a 1000kv motor, 100a Phoenixtech ESC & all servos. The only change made was the ESC to a CC ICE 100a ESC. I use a 16 tooth pinion on 6s 5000ma packs governed at 1785rpm HS in Idl2 (95% flat throttle curve) & getting 8 min. flight times with 30% charge remaining in the batt (flys great). I don't fly 3D or even hard sport flying (yet), just orientation practice (nose in is really tough), bad figure 8's & really ugly stall turns but I am learning & enjoy every min. of it. Ihave a MD500 600 size fuse & 5 blade head & want to fly scale next year. Should be a good winter project.

My canopy has the Skull too. Thanks for the info. At least I have a general game plan now. I still have purchase all the gear which is a small fortune, so this will probably be a winter project too.

Jim, Here's another link you might find helpful. Just realized I had it pinned to the search bar of my browser. It's a utility from Castle Creations web site that calculates just about every variable applicable to electric helis. Good luck. www.ecalc.ch/helicalc.htm?castle&lang=en

Hi Harpy, if your plan in the long run is to put it into a fuse I would look more at 8c or 10c. The extra cells will help keep it cooler, and the extra batteries will help balance that tail heavy fuse.
