I am going to run a bit of a build thread for the Huey. It is going to take a few months to complete I would suspect, so drop in now and then to see the progress. What's on the box. The kit came very well packaged in a large outer box, 41x14x19 inches. That had an inner box with the kit in that. The kit is well packed in lots of acoustic type foam and individual bags etc. No damage evident to any part and all parts are there. Ten out of ten for packaging. This kit has done the trip from China to the USA and then to Australia and is in perfect condition. This pic is of the fuselage and weapon parts. The main cabin section has opening crew doors and sliding side cabin doors for battery access. The upper "dog house" section of the fuse lifts off for access to mechanicals. Attachments:

Next is the mechanicals. The Chaos 600 or T-Rex 600 torque tube type mechanicals are used as a base for this heli. Essentially you take all the bits out of your existing heli or build up using new parts. These parts go into a new frame supplied with the kit utilizing a lower mounted boom block and a motor setup like a 700. These kits are definitely for experienced builders as there are no detailed instructions....you are on your own. The servos are mounted in different positions from the stock kit. The builder has to figure out the install and setup themselves...that is the bit I am going to enjoy most. I can foresee a lot of trial and error. I hope to jury rig up the mechanicals to some form of landing gear and fly them without the fuselage to setup the FBL system. The extra work may save some scary moments. Attachments:

This is the instructions for building the frame and mechanicals and servo install.....total.....one pic... No other info...you figure it all out yourself. Now that is the kind of challenge I like.....probably some swearing going to happen at this end...but at least it will test the mental faculties a bit. Attachments:

Bob, totally awesome brother...you are going to have fun building that huge thing. BTW, very good idea on "test flying it with the 3G setup before installing the fuse". I gotta say, you've a great attitude on all of this especially when you're telling us there isn't really any instructions along with the kit on how everything should go together. I can only imagine for most folks, it would be a disapointing moment when opening the box follow by alot of yelling and God knows what...LOL. You're absolutely right, I think figuring out everything on your own will be half the fun on building something like this. Good luck and please do take a few pics now and then as this project gets on the way, I think it may be something good for you to have for reference as well.

In actual fact, it's probably reasonable not to expect detailed instructions. These kits are for seasoned builders and really, a pic of the built object is good enough. Between Cliff, Kin from Smartmodel and a couple of other dealers, I reckon they would be over the moon if they sold a couple of hundred or so of each kit. It's a fairly small market. So to have some-one spend a heap of time developing in depth instructions would only add to the cost and I dont believe they are that necessary. We are used to say, a company like Align, selling thousands of kits and probably having a large staff that deals with publications. Also Align sell and supply all the parts for a kit...servos, motors, esc's, all the hardware etc, so they can make a manual that is fairly specific, even down to shims or washers.
With these scale kits, they are left to the builder to use whatever hardware, electronics, power plant and power supply they want, so specific instructions are not really possible. I spent about an hour or so last night and built the frame, no problems...one pic is good enough. The instructions are available on RCA's site as a pdf download, on the page with the kits descriptions...just like the Chaos helis instructions.

The basic frame is together....as you can use either the T-rex 600 or the Chaos 600...the frame spacers and boom block drive gear bearing blocks are supplied to fit the T-rex and spacer blocks and spacer washers in carbon fibre are supplied to make them fit the wider frame of the Chaos. I had a heap of the wider frame spacers for the Chaos as spares so I used those. It was an easy build and the resulting frame is very stiff, absolutely no flex. The Chaos boom block has the drive gear removed and a longer one as supplied is fitted along with two bearing blocks for it. When it is all tightened up, the gears have a very smooth action with no slop. I am very impressed with the manufacture of these parts. The fits are perfect...and little touches like a radiused curve on the inside of the attachment lugs to secure the frame into the heli show good engineering principals. These are certainly not just a roughly constructed frame just to provide some sort of means of fitting the mechanics....a lot of thought and care has been taken in the design. It only took an hour or so to build up....I have built the FBL head and am waiting on the KDE main gear and gear case to arrive, so I can fit it and start the servo install. Attachments:

A shot from above...the tail rotor is driven by the metal gear fitted onto the extended boom block input drive gear shaft.... Ooops, wrong pic....unable to change it via the edit..... Attachments:

One from the front.....the third bearing block from the Chaos is utilized...if I was just using a normal T-rex, I would add the third bearing anyway as the frame is really stiff with it in. Attachments:

It's been a while since I updated this build....one..Christmas is a bit hectic and two, not much happened on the build as I was waiting for a month for the KDE main gear and case to arrive. That arrived last week. I have now installed the servos, setup the cyclics and set them up on the 3GX. A bit of juggling was required to install the servos and I used a Chaos support plate with some Alclad bonded to it for the 3GX plate. I had to drill the frame to attach it. Everything has gone well...the swash levelled without any subtrim and blade zero pitch was smack in the middle of the mainshaft. I am currently setting up the tail and then will make up some sort of landing skid to allow me to fly the basic pod and boom assembly before final fit into the fuse. I have included a couple of pics of it so far including a test fit into the fuse. Attachments:

I have a few close ups of the servo installations, but they are too big to upload...only 1024kb allowed per pic, and my photo resizer doesn't want to play nice at the moment. I will add a couple soon. Attachments:

Looking very nice there Bob, just one question though...did the kit not come with a tail boom cause I see you're using an Align one. Just wondering....
