One of those perfect RC kinda days - weather was great - I burned half a gallon of nitro in my car and flew 5 packs through the 600 and about 7 packs through the Chaos 450 I finally got in the air. Doing some tweaking I got everything perfect and on my last planned flight about half way through the pack I did a mild pitch pump and BOOM I lost the tail.
I got it down with minimal damage - scrapped up the blade tips - broke the skids and bent the feathering shaft - Everything else was fine.
Post mortem though was showing the gear mesh was fine on both sides of the tail but the tail was not "connected" to the main rotor.
Pulled the tail off expecting to find a sheared torque tube but it was fine. The key on both umbrella gears looked great.... Seem the tail boom was loose in the mount and it moved just enough to disengage the torque tube and down she came......
Damn that is a helpless feeling
Any suggestions on getting the boom in there tighter. I have the screws in there as tight as I can clamping against the tail box

I use cellophane tape to make the boom slightly thicker.
The wide stuff used for packing boxes is strongest and most secure.
Pinning the boom works too.
Drill a small hole through the boom-block and into the tail boom and insert a small short screw.
Make sure you clean out the metal shavings after drilling.

Pin the boom. Drill a hole through the gear case and boom and installed a screw. Works great! Or even put a piece of sand paper around the boom.

Here is the pick when I pinned the boom on the 500. I also pinned all the 450's I've owned. Attachments:

Well I pinned the tail boom - Actually drilled and tapped it and it is in there snug now. Changed the pushrod for the tail as I had a twitch in the tail like the gyro had too much gain and I saw it vibrating. Pushrod no longer vibrates but I get a twitch still unless I bring the gain down to 35 on my A9.... At which point it is not really holding the tail.
Any ideas there. The gyro is the Phoenixtech one that came with the combo kit

First things to check.. 1...Gyro mounting....are you using proper foam? 2...Slack in the tail 3...Try turning down the tail travel limits until you are happy with how fast it turns. You then may be able to turn up the gain. 4...Slow tail servo. This should be ok if you got the combo kit. I'm not sure if it is the Phoenix gyro but I remember seeing here that it works better on 6v. I'm not sure on that one someone here might confirm. Either way something is up. Hope this helps you somehow

+1 on the 6v....actually if I remember correctly it's something like 6.2 to 6.4 or something but don't quote me on it. I just know its picky! I'll be honest, there are plenty of ppl that have really good luck with the GT9 gyro but there are some (like myself) that just couldn't never get it dialed in. That said, I just went with a Spartan Q. The setup is super simple and it's been holding really well for the longest time. Matter of fact, if I wasn't going FBL on my 600...I would of still had it on there but since I am using the BW FBL head and gyro setup currently. Good luck and hope it all turns out well for ya.

The servo that came with it is the align ds520 - I am using the Phoenixtech 45amp speed controller that came with it. Guess I need to find the setup instructions for it to see if I can change the BEC voltage. This is not the GT9 gyro but it appears to be the futaba knock off that is so popular. Basically has two dip switches to select travel direction and analog/digital and two pots for delay and travel limits.
I have the endpoints on the radio at 85 and the pot on the gyro set at minimum. Instruction say to put the delay at zero with a digital servo.
The boom is firmly fixed and the slider for the tail rotor seems nice and smooth with out bind
Not sure I understand the "slow" the tail servo.... do you mean the delay setting. I currently have it set to none and I have gone to the middle setting and also maxed it out - I could not notice a difference.
Again thanks for the help

Ah I did not know you had that gyro. Try putting your limits on the TX to 100 and turning down the travel limit on the gyro till it does not bind.Leave the servo loose on the boom so you can slide it up and down the boom and you can get max travel in each direction. When you have the gyro limit as far as it goes and the tail slider moves max direction in each direction without bind then thighten the servo on the boom. You can really fine tune it doing this and you can hear the servo buz when it is at its limit. If that does not work I would take a gyro of one of your other birds to rule out the gyro.
What is ment was the servo speed is too slow. But that is not the case here. If the servo is slow it would lag behind the speed of the gyro.

Here is the pick when I pinned the boom on the 500. I also pinned all the 450's I've owned. This just happened to me today , all of a sudden the tail was acting weird . Brought it down and the tail stopped turning and sounded like gears grinding . . looked at the TT tail and it wasn't even close to the gears . Now its pinned , thanks !
