Getting real close now, I just finished soldering all my connecters on and sanding the frame. Now its time to put everything in its place and strap, screw it down, then it on to set up. If I am lucky I can take it out into the driveway tonight and give it a quick spin up without the blades on before I start working on the pitch setting.
I only charged up one battery, and it it took just over an hour. I am not going to bother charging the other till I am actually ready to try hovering, and I still have to put together my landing gear. It requires a little epoxy to hold the balls in place permanently.

OK I got it wired and spun it up had to reverse the thottle and the motor, but everything else seems good. Now its time to get to work on that set up.

I just suffered my first incident, gusty wind and I forgot to reset my expos. End result two dead blades and a bent main shaft. Everything else checks out so far but now it will be a good 2-3 weeks before I am ready to try again. I am heart broken but not down and out for good. I was expecting to have to replace some parts, just not in the first 3 minutes of spinning it up. Didn't even get off the ground, just a little spin left and right to check the tail control.
Now what to do with the fully charged battery, and the one that I used for set up. Would it be OK to plug the min to the helicopter and just let the motor spin them down or use the discharge feature on the charge and put the batteries back to storage charge?

Damn, so sorry to hear that bro. but part of the hobby...I know ppl don't like to hear it...well atleast I didn't at first but got to learn real quick that happens! Get her fixed and put her back in the air is all you can do....good luck with that. As for what to do with the remaining charged up lipo, you can do either or of what you said. I personally took my main/tail blades off one day and just let it spin till it got to 25 - 30% but you can also discharge as mentioned.

I can't really just let it spin without blades because the shaft is just bent enough to cause wobble. My charger has a discharge function, so I will put them on that and discharge at 1 amp to 18V then let it rest while I do the same to the other. then once they are both discharged I will give them a storage charge just in case I am down longer than I estimate. I knew I would crash so even though I am a little down and I did curse when it happened and while I was inspecting the damage, but I am not discouraged about the hobby yet. that will take a couple thousand more crashes in a row with no air time. I was pricing replacement parts and noticed that they carry 600mm wooden blades for $36. Would they work as learning blades, till I get the skills I need to really fly? I am just thinking that at half the price its a little easier to replace and shorter down times. I also need to see how much Chris will charge me for shipping on one of his crash kits

Dam sorry to hear that mate. Woodies will certainly do for the early stage and go ahead and use the charger to discharge. This discharging lark happens me a bit. If it is fine out I charge the batteries then it rains so I have to discharge! I was thinking of gettting a truck headlight ( 24v) and plugging it into the battery to discharge!!

I just may go the wooden blade way, and pick up two sets instead of one set of CF blades, and a spare main shaft at the end of next week. I forgot that I have a Good and Services Tax credit do to come in on the 6th so that will be enough to cover the parts. That way I can get it put back together before I bring in to someone to do the setup on it. I also my order a couple sets of CF blades from HK. Hopefully 4 sets of main blades will get me into the air at least once

Musts to have on a crash kit: main blades, tail boom, spindle, main shaft, flybar, and main gear. There is a good chance if you bent the main shaft and broke your blades I would pull out the spindle and check it! My father tipped his 450 over the other day, didn't crash just topped over on landing. He chipped his main blades and that small amount of impact bent his spindle.

I know the main shaft is bent, about 1/32" of deflection. It is barely noticeable if you just look at it, but if you rolling on glass you can see it, and if you try spin it up in the machine that 1/32" turns into 1/16" total. Everything else checks out, so just blades and main shaft on this crash.
I know I need the other stuff too in the long run, but its just a thing of balancing a fixed income, a bit here a bit there, but necessities first. A new Tx/Rx is high on the list as well.

Yeah I was looking at the HK CF blades, only thing is the time it would take for them to get here. I was thinking I may just buy a couple sets of the wooden blades or one set of the CF blades locally on payday to get the helicopter flyable again quickly, and order a couple sets of the HK CF blades to have on hand when I need them.
Payday is still a week away so it gives me some time to decide what way to go. I also want to get a few other spare parts on hand for when I need them. Things like a spare flybar or two, tail boom, feathering shafts, main shafts, and maybe another set of tail blades. I do have a couple of main gears sitting here and the CF tail blades that I haven't put on the helicopter yet. I put the plastic ones on till I gained a little confidence. I am sure I will figure out a few other spare parts I will need too before the end of the week.

Just an odd thought here, for when I actually get my helicopter up and running and can fly it with some confidence.
Has anyone mounted a GPS on their helicopter before? I am not talking about the units that are made for RC, but an actual GPS unit like the Garmin e Trex? I have the eTrex Legend HCx, it only weighs 156g, so I am sure the 600 could carry it no problem if I mounted it directly under the main shaft between the skids. I do wonder though if there would be too much electrical interference for it to pick up the satellites.
I figure it is a more accurate way to log particulars of my flights without having it purchase more equipment.
